Blarney U17’s v Buttevant – National Cup

Blarney started slowly and were made to pay after 15 minutes when premier outfit Buttevant took the lead with a great team move . Blarney responded well and equalised minutes later when centre forward Cian Dunlea hit the back of the net with a tremendous strike from 20 yards ,attacking full back Len Sheehan with a great assist. Both teams continued to attack but the scores remained level at halftime. The second half was a great contest with both teams looking for a second goal. Blarney’s back four well marshalled by captain Shane Ahern and centre half Chris Kett stood strong allowing wingers Alan Shine and Oliver Keane to torment the Buttevant defence. Stephen Looney drove through the Buttevant midfield and split the Buttevant defence with a terrific pass to Darragh Hurley however Darragh’s goal bound effort was somehow cleared off the line. Both teams continued to press but after  90 minutes it was still 1-1. Extra time started at a blistering pace and the fitness of both teams was outstanding but ,with Blarney introducing 3 subs ,they were now gaining the upper hand in the game. Darragh Holland found Oliver Keane with a great pass and Oliver after dribbling passed two players found the bottom corner of the net with a great shot from 25 yards out.  Three minutes later left back John Forrest capped a brilliant performance by running the length of the pitch only to be hacked down for a penalty as he was about to pull the trigger. Alan Shine stepped up and gave the keeper no chance with his well struck penalty. Two minutes into the second half of extra time Blarney keeper Jake O Leary pulled off a brilliant save to keep the game at 3-1. That save ended the Buttevant challenge and Blarney were unlucky not to score another before the final whistle blew. Great squad effort and thanks to all for the support on a misty Friday evening in Riverview under lights.
